The Bowl
For this assignment, the task was to explore the countless outcomes and
shapes using variety of methods with aluminium sheet. Firstly, we were provided
with a large flat 2mm aluminium sheet to create a bowl which was then cut into
smaller pieces using guillotine.
From a square piece of aluminium sheet, using metal snips, circular shape
was marked and cut. Then, the edges were shrunk using the sharper end of the
nylon mallet.
Once the edges are shrunk, the round end of the mallet was used to stretch
the surface and create a curve. Repeating this step, the aluminium sheet begins
to form a very shallow bowl shape. To make this deeper, hammering using nylon
mallet from inside gives more depth. The inner part of the bowl is then
stretched with hammering on the sandbag.
Using a flat-head hammer and steel semi-sphere mould, the bowl is gently
hammered to create more consistent, and even finishes on the surface. The
surface is further refined and smoothened using English wheel which helps in
removing the lumps on the surface and have extra smooth surface.
The template was measured and created using black form core to prove the
consistency of the bowl.
